Facebook vs. LinkedIn

FBvsLI

Over the past year, a couple of my clients have begun making moves onto LinkedIn. Although they’ve been on board the Facebook train for sometime, they’ve decided to make the shift onto LinkedIn for a few reasons:

1. The Target Demo: The belief that this is where the older, affluent target demo lives online
2. The “Respectable” Platform: LinkedIn is associated with success and accomplishments; an opportunity for the brand to also associate with these things
3. The “Newness”: LinkedIn is still seen as relatively new and the audience is still growing

These are all perfect reasons why creating a brand presence on LinkedIn makes sense; however, does this mean that more effort should be put into LinkedIn rather than Facebook? In my opinion, no.

LinkedIn being still relatively new lacks a LOT of what Facebook has already spent years perfecting. I believe that Facebook still excels in three main areas: Audience insights (interests and usage), advertising (self-serve ads and better targeting), and finally media type publishing options. The back end of LinkedIn just does not compete – it’s incredibly basic, in the sense that knowing your audience and advertising to them is very limited. And next, on the front end, it is just no where near as aesthetic: photos are very hard to optimize for both desktop and mobile, and there are still no native video option.

Also… what’s sup with their news feed algorithm? It feels busy, and cluttered and just doesn’t makes sense seeing things from weeks ago beside recent updates. Just odd (and I know I’m not the only one who thinks their news feed could use some work).

For another perspective for the comparison, check out [this great infographic] specifically focusing on the advertising on both platforms.

Majestic Casual Chapter 1

majestic-625x357

Majestic Casual: The one YouTube channel I can say defines my music taste. The one music channel that never disappoints. The one source that has been helping me explore beyond my music limits since I fell onto this musical plain.

Majestic has been around since 2011, but has grown quickly since obtaining over 1 million subscribers, followers and fans. Although Majestic may be a collective of other artists, it really has become it’s own genre with a community of music lovers looking for the next thing they can fall in love with.

Yes, I’ll be buying this album right after I hit “publish”.

“Music discovery has traditionally been dominated by DJ culture, a privileged group of individuals with the power to break records, artists and new scenes, and while that dominance still remains, today’s deeply connected digital world has led to the emergence of ‘bedroom tastemakers’, a growing band of YouTube channels and individuals with the power to influence millions. At the forefront is Majestic Casual, part of the elite league of YouTube music channels with over a million subscribers… And counting.”  – Majestic Casual

Mini Playlist of the Day: St. Lucia

Last year I was completely drawn into this one-man band for 2 reasons; The first being the obviously beautiful music they create, and secondly his name is the Island that my Dad is from- St. Lucia.  Since today seems like one of the fist really beautiful days of the year so far, I decided this might be a nice time to get reacquainted.

St. Lucia is one guy, Phillip-Jean Grobler from Johannesburg South Africa (you sure don’t hear that everyday). Eventually he shifted to England and then wound up in New York. There he produced some of these amazing alternative electro-pop songs. Just like the Caribbean island, you’ll probably find the music to be sunny and relaxing.

1. “All Eyes On You”- St. Lucia
2. “Paper Heart”- St. Lucia
3. “September”- St- Lucia
4. “Closer Than This”- St. Lucia (Acoustic) (Above)

“Cargo” Short Film

If you love zombie movies or shows, watch this. If you love stuff that makes you feel emotions that cannot be contained and then they force their way out through your tear ducts, watch this.

Tropfest is an Australian short film festival (apparently the world’s largest). CARGO has made it as a finalist for this year’s awards, and by the way this film is blowing up, this might just be the biggest contender.

CARGO is about a man caught in a “Walking Dead” type zombie apocalypse. When he wakes up to a bite mark, he must find away to save his baby daughter.

Genres for this fest include, horror, drama, comedy and more and because they’re just so darn short, and so darn good, I could spend a few nights in a row scouring through these entries.
