Mini Playlist of the Day: Chet Faker & Flume

Chet Faker solo: Amazing. Flume solo: Amazing.

So what happens when you have two amazing artists come together? You get something magically mesmerizing. These artist’s styles aren’t all that similar as solo acts, but that whole opposites attracts thing really takes into effect here; they compliment each other incredibly well! Flume’s mixes with Chet’s wonderfully sexy, sultry voice means eargasms all over the place. (And yes. I just said eargasm). With the release of their latest collab, “Drop the Game”, I’ve decided to pay tribute and put together this mini-playlist. Enjoy!

1. “This Song is Not About a Girl”– Chet Faker & Flume
2. “What About Us”– Flume & Chet Faker
3. “Drop the Game”– Chet Faker & Flume (above)
4. “Left Alone”– Flume ft. Chet Faker

Oxford Birth Year Word Genorator

MSN-Smileys

This is a pretty interesting word generator that tells you  a word that was added to the Oxford English Dictionary the year you were born!

I was born in 1990, and my word is:

“Emoticon” n.

A representation of a facial expression formed by a short sequence of keyboard characters (usually to be viewed sideways) and used in electronic mail, etc., to convey the sender’s feelings or intended tone.

This makes me feel like I’m 12 years old right now because in my  my mind, “emoticons” weren’t a thing until the days of MSN messenger. I also bet “emoji” made it in this year! Other words from the 90s include: auto-complete, blog, wiki, cybercafe, hacktivism… and bling.

See yours [here]!

Cool Covers: “Get Lucky”- George Barnett (Daft Punk)

This song is still just going and going…

I’ve heard A LOT of covers of this song and this is definitely up there with the favourites. George Barnett covers Daft Punk but removes a bit of the disco and replaces it with a little more edge. The ONLY thing I dislike is that weird “I’m in a club” horn. Other than that, I love his voice, the shakers, the guitar, the drums and even the little electronic break down. This cover is definitely worth a listen.

A+ for bedroom recordings too.

Mini-Playlist Of The Day: Cool Down

These songs give me chills, which makes them perfect for summer nights.

I don’t know about your city, but Toronto has been stuck in a sweaty, sticky, muggy mood lately. When I get home from work, all I can do it change into something hardly there, lie on my bed and let my fan cool me down. I’ll press play to my “cool down” playlist and drift off. By this, I don’t mean fall asleep, but drift off in the sense that it’ll just calm me down and allow me to think and breathe again. I have been compiling a few of these songs throughout the start of the summer until now, and I feel like these songs all fit the same beautiful mellow mood. If you just need to chill, relax or even reflect on the day (without falling asleep), give these songs a try:

1. “Desire”- Dems
2. “Falling”- HAIM
3. “Under”- AOSOON
4. “Without”- Sampha

BONUS:
5. “Miasma Sky”-BATHS

Classic Art Meets Modern Hipster

classical-sculptures-hipsters-7

This is so great that now I’m not sure what’s better: Hipster Disney Princesses or this.

Pretty amazing concept from Leo Caillard, with retouching from Alexis Persani. These guys make classic art relevant again. Not sure what it is about hipster culture that is so easy to make fun of… I take that back. I know exactly why it’s funny. It’s one of those cultures where stereotypes are so true and so prominent in society that we all find the relatable humor in that truth. Everyone either knows someone who is a hipster, or they are a hipster themselves (even if they want to deny it).

“Voyeur”- James Blake (Bear//Face Bootleg Edit)

What an unreal mix of this song! I have James Blake’s live album and that thing soothes the crap out of me, and it can put me right to sleep (which I don’t mean in a bad way at all). This mix still has that soothing vibe, but in a completely different way that’s uplifting but raw, dirty and heavy all at the same time. I’m loving the base line and new slightly faster pace. Super chill, super rad.

Ps. James Blake in Toronto tomorrow night? Down!

Mini-Playlist of The Day

This mini-playlist is wonderful for those early Spring work days. Those days where you want to be outside but you can’t, because you’re stuck at a desk- like today! This collection of songs has a great combination of pretty chill beats, nothing too fast, nothing too slow. Most mix that with cool melodies, that make you feel all good inside (and not so terrible about sitting at that desk).

Mini-Playlist:

1. “Phone Sex”- Blood Diamonds ft. Grimes
2. “Not The Same”- Tanlines
3. “Velour”- Darius
4. “She Never Came Back”- College ft. Electric Youth
