The “Herd Effect”: Nothing New

The “Herd effect”: Nothing new to the online world.

SourceFed is hilarious and I love their informative video. However, this one popped up and made me wonder “just how long ago was this posted”. Surprisingly, only yesterday! I think most people, if not everyone can agree that the Herd Effect exists, and it exists in the online world almost predominantly.

Take viral videos as a prime example; You see a video pop up on your feed 3 or 4 times, your reaction is usually curiosity of “what it is”, but I’m sure there also lies the feeling of not wanting to be left out- “I need to know what this is all about!” The same goes for the growth of a social network platform; I have had numerous friends claim to ‘hop on the Twitter wandbaggon’ after the first year or two that it was out, just because their friends liked it and were on it. Well there was Twitter, and Facebook, and Instagram and Vine, and Snapchat, and… The list goes on.

This type of reaction to do what others are doing isn’t a big surprise in the online world, so it’s not super shocking that something with a lot of likes, would also be liked by other peers. It’s human nature in the digital space.

TIP: Just remember brands out there that fake likes are NOT cool. Learn from another brands past mistakes or even read about how it can be a dick move [here].

Cool Covers: “Get Lucky”- George Barnett (Daft Punk)

This song is still just going and going…

I’ve heard A LOT of covers of this song and this is definitely up there with the favourites. George Barnett covers Daft Punk but removes a bit of the disco and replaces it with a little more edge. The ONLY thing I dislike is that weird “I’m in a club” horn. Other than that, I love his voice, the shakers, the guitar, the drums and even the little electronic break down. This cover is definitely worth a listen.

A+ for bedroom recordings too.

“Tunnel Vision” by Justin Timberlake

WARNING: This video is definitely NSFW, but if you’re alone and are completely into “adult feelings” then I totally recommend checking this video out.

I know the video is age restricted right now, but if you’re of age, you should definitely watch it. A lot of people associate those age restrictions with porn, but it’s not. Definitely not. When nudity is done tastefully and in a creative way to show the beauty of the human figure- that’s what I like. I feel like North America is really missing out when it comes to this acceptance of nudity.

A few years ago I had a layover flight in Paris, and I was shocked at first to see nude women on billboards. I was familiar with the nude figure at that age because of my art background, but it was still such a culture shock even after that. In Europe, public nudity like those ads and a video like this is seen as tasteful and respectful; it can mean something other than just sex. Just a thought: Maybe if we also learned to accept the human figure as a beautiful thing (and not just sexually), maybe then it would be easier for people to believe that their own bodies were beautiful more often. Anyways, I don’t like getting political or societal or whatever, so I’ll switch to my thoughts on to the actual video.

I love it. Bottom line, I love it. I think it’s tasteful and beautiful. It doesn’t over sexualize the women in the video but rather helps accentuate the meaning of the song. The only thing he sees is her; not her friends, not how much she makes, not the clothes she wears… just her. I think the projections on top of their bodies is beautiful too. I’ve always loved creative projections, but I especially like when he does his “tunnel video hands” in the back as she dances in front of them.

In contrast to the recent “Blurred Lines” video by Robin Thicke, I think this is done much better, and not in a way to send a message that has little to nothing to do with your lyrics (like Blurred Lines). I do appreciate that video and love the done, but I have more respect for JT as an artist after this one for sure. Let me know what you think as a comment!

“Ratchet”- Bloc Party

This is just a quick need to share.

New Bloc Party video out as of yesterday. If you love the band or can appreciate some awesome post production work, this is a must watch. Although it does look like a major glitch attack, it’s done in a really creative way that makes you want to know what’s going to happen next.

Hate the name of the song. Love the song itself. And the video.

Jobs (Official Trailer)

This movie looks like it’ll be way better than I initially thought. I’m going to try my best not to dwell too much on the who Ashton thing. I know people don’t like him, but I’m going to hope he can impress me like he did in The Butterfly Effect.

I’m kind of curious as to what will be better, this or “The Facebook Movie” aka The Social Network. I think it’s really awesome to have movies like this that give us insight into the lives of people who have achieved great accomplishments, but also to see the way that start-ups evolve. People like Jobs, Zuckerburg and even Bill Gates don’t become rich overnight. I find their journeys extremely interesting and inspiring.

I’m also most excited for the “nobody cares about typography” part. Well- I DO! I want to see how much emphasis they put on that issue. Not only did Jobs revolutionize the personal computer and the interfaces of the technology we use, but he also had a crazy impact on the typography we now know and love. Pretty cool if you ask me.

The Lego Movie

This trailer is a must watch if you’ve ever owned or played with Legos. The line up of voice characters includes Chris Pratt, Morgan Freeman, Alison Brie, Will Arnett, Channing Tatum and others. I thought the trailer was pretty funny, not hilarious by any means, but still pretty funny. I’m a fan of superheros as well, so I find it interesting that they’re being shown in their Lego form without the crazy kick-ass special effects. I was curious if this was going to be a stop motion film with the Lego, but it’s actually computer animated. I do like how they did sort of make it look stop motion-y in some details though, such as their body and  mouth movements. Pretty cool.

Check out the trailer above and stay tuned after that for the BeyondTheTrailer review with Grace. If you’re a movie lover (especially comic book related ones) I definitely recommend checking out more of her videos.

“Doin’ It Right” Daft Punk ft. Panda Bear

I gave the new Daft Punk album, Random Access Memories, a listen and I already have favourites. This is “Doin’ It Right” which includes one of their big collaborations with Panda Bear. Panda Bear is actually one of the founding members of Animal Collective. I discovered this cool fact pretty recently and it completely blew my mind.

I’m going to use the top comment of this video as my mini review:

Screen Shot 2013-05-15 at 6.55.05 PM

I love this comment because the first sentence is completely true. Knowing and loving Animal Collective music and now Panada Bear’s, the amount that I dig this song doesn’t surprise me. Also I love Discovery too (the band, not the album). This song didn’t remind me of them at first, but after seeing the comment, I can definitely make the connection.

Thor: The Dark World Trailer

Oh the anticipation.

Being a comic book lover (and not just the comic book movies), I was pretty darn excited to see this trailer pop-up all over the internet. Check it out above if you haven’t already.

Have you noticed that comic book movies have taken a really dark twist this year? Man of Steel, Iron Man 3, Wolverine and now the new Thor trailer all have this deep, dark and dramatic feel to them. Clearly the comic-turned-movie franchises are taking some lessons from the Dark Knight Trilogy. These films look like they could exceed expectations solely because they’re evolving and learning from past mistakes. Just like real comic books, it’s not always about the action sequences, but first and foremost the stories, the relationships between characters and the characters themselves. Hopefully the days of crappy Fantasic 4, Green Lantern and Spiderman (the Tobey Maguire versions, especially 3… That was just terrible) are over!

Mini Playlist of the Day: St. Lucia

Last year I was completely drawn into this one-man band for 2 reasons; The first being the obviously beautiful music they create, and secondly his name is the Island that my Dad is from- St. Lucia.  Since today seems like one of the fist really beautiful days of the year so far, I decided this might be a nice time to get reacquainted.

St. Lucia is one guy, Phillip-Jean Grobler from Johannesburg South Africa (you sure don’t hear that everyday). Eventually he shifted to England and then wound up in New York. There he produced some of these amazing alternative electro-pop songs. Just like the Caribbean island, you’ll probably find the music to be sunny and relaxing.

1. “All Eyes On You”- St. Lucia
2. “Paper Heart”- St. Lucia
3. “September”- St- Lucia
4. “Closer Than This”- St. Lucia (Acoustic) (Above)

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Trailer

I knew that they’d be showing a preview of this at the MTV Movie awards, but I was not expecting it to look this amazing. I was also expecting a 30 second trailer, but clearly I was wrong (thankfully). I’ve read the books and I’ve watched the first movie, and this trailer gave me goosebumps. It also made me want to raise my 3 fingers in the air.

I know a lot of people were looking forward to the trailer introducing some of the new characters, and I am a little surprised that they didn’t, but considering that this is only the first trailer, we’ll probably get to see them a little later this year in another one. If you don’t know the back story of this or haven’t read the books, I feel like the trailer might not have the same effect because of quite a few parts of the story left out. Either way, we all know this movie is going to do well, and if you liked the first one, you’ll probably like this one too. Too bad November is so darn far away!
