Mini Playlist of the Day: The Letter “V”

So I missed Valentine’s Day by almost a week… but that’s okay, because this isn’t a playlist about love, or lust, or chocolates and flowers. No. Today I’m doing a different kind of “V-Day” by shouting out artists with the letter “V”. Sort of like Sesame Street. Yes, exactly.

1. “Premonitions”– VAULTS
2. “Heartbeat”– VÉRITÉ
3. “Fade Away”– VITALIC
4. “Bittersweet Symphony”– The VERVE

Bonus:
5. “Hunger Of The Pine”– VAULTS (ALT-J Remake)

*Just to note: I had such a hard time deciding on songs for this. There aren’t THAT many artists/band that I really like that start with “V”. Let me know on Twitter if you can think of more.

Mini Playlist of the Day: Chet Faker & Flume

Chet Faker solo: Amazing. Flume solo: Amazing.

So what happens when you have two amazing artists come together? You get something magically mesmerizing. These artist’s styles aren’t all that similar as solo acts, but that whole opposites attracts thing really takes into effect here; they compliment each other incredibly well! Flume’s mixes with Chet’s wonderfully sexy, sultry voice means eargasms all over the place. (And yes. I just said eargasm). With the release of their latest collab, “Drop the Game”, I’ve decided to pay tribute and put together this mini-playlist. Enjoy!

1. “This Song is Not About a Girl”– Chet Faker & Flume
2. “What About Us”– Flume & Chet Faker
3. “Drop the Game”– Chet Faker & Flume (above)
4. “Left Alone”– Flume ft. Chet Faker

Mini-Playlist of the day: WhoMadeWho

Six months ago I stumbled onto WhoMadeWho’s “Inside World”. It was instant love! I decided to check out more of their songs at that point, but unfortunately, for some reason I wasn’t falling in love with anything else from them at the time. When this happens, I’ll often try revisiting the band at some later date just to see if there is something I missed.

Plus sometimes even with music, you can be blinded by love and stuck in the “nothing is better than this” mode. Today I’m sharing a couple more songs I’ve been able to open up emotionally to:

1. “Greyhound”- WhoMadeWho
2. “The Sun”- WhoMadeWho
3. “Inside World”- WhoMadeWho (Acoustic) (Above)
4. “Space For Rent”- WhoMadeWho
5. “Keep Me In My Plane”- WhoMadeWho

Mini Playlist of the Day: The Grove

A couple weeks ago when everyone was at VELD, Lollapalooza or Osheaga, I was in my own backyard at The Grove Music Festival sponsored by Canadian Club Mixed & Ready. Although it was only a one day, lesser known festival, I had an amazing time. Originally the festival was to take place in Niagara Falls, and Macklemore was to headline the show. When they switched to Toronto, Macklemore dropped out along with a few others, and eventually Phoenix was officially set as the headliner. The line up was as follows:

TheGrove-b

Unfortunately I found out the day of the fest that Icona Pop ditched too. I was pretty darn disappointed by that especially after discovering they were at Osheaga the very next day. Maybe it would have been better if it was on a different weekend or something. It was a pretty cheap festival around the corner, so no complaints from me there. Here’s a mini playlist from some of my favourite acts from the show:

1. “Bourgeois”- Phoenix
2. “Dark & Stormy- Hot Chip
3. “Rain Of Gold”- Young Empires
4. “Burning”- Nightbox

Mini-Playlist Of The Day: Cool Down

These songs give me chills, which makes them perfect for summer nights.

I don’t know about your city, but Toronto has been stuck in a sweaty, sticky, muggy mood lately. When I get home from work, all I can do it change into something hardly there, lie on my bed and let my fan cool me down. I’ll press play to my “cool down” playlist and drift off. By this, I don’t mean fall asleep, but drift off in the sense that it’ll just calm me down and allow me to think and breathe again. I have been compiling a few of these songs throughout the start of the summer until now, and I feel like these songs all fit the same beautiful mellow mood. If you just need to chill, relax or even reflect on the day (without falling asleep), give these songs a try:

1. “Desire”- Dems
2. “Falling”- HAIM
3. “Under”- AOSOON
4. “Without”- Sampha

BONUS:
5. “Miasma Sky”-BATHS

Mini-Playlist Of The Day: HUMANS

A nice little past time of mine is discovering new music. This music doesn’t necessarily need to be brand new and never heard before (please stop calling me a “hipster”), but it’s nice to discover stuff that’s new to me.

I recently found out that I might me going to Keloha? Random. I know. But pretty cool because the line-up looks pretty amazing. This definitely isn’t any sort of Osheaga line-up but there are a few great acts. A new/old band that I’ve discovered from the line-up is HUMANS. They’re an electronic-indie-pop duo from Vancouver and I’m really digging their sound and variety from one song to the next. Some of their videos are a little messed up, but that’s cool. Check out some of their songs below:

1. “AVEC MES MECS”- HUMANS (above)
2. “Horizon”- HUMANS
3. “Wicked Games”- HUMANS ft. Tristan Orchard
4.“The End”- HUMANS

Mini Playlist of the Day: To Kill A King Collabs

I discovered To Kill A King through their collaborations with Bastille and I’m still slowly warming up to the stuff they do on their own. I don’t know what it is, but the remixes of their songs and the collabs that they do, they just hit me right away, and I know I’ll love the song right off the bat. Just like this song, “Funeral” remixed by Tyde.

Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t NOT like their own music. I actually think they’re usually very intricate and quite beautiful overall. It just takes me a few listens to really get attached. If you don’t feel the same then cool, but still check out out their collabs, covers and remixed songs because I definitely think there’s something especially magical there. I’m very fond of almost everything they do with Bastille so I’ve included a few of those below.

1. “Funeral”- To Kill A King (Tyde Remix) (above)
2. “Bloody Shirt”- To Kill A King vs Bastille
3. “These Streets”- To Kill A King ft. Bastille
4. “Oblivion”- To Kill A King (Bastille Cover)

Mini Playlist of the Day: St. Lucia

Last year I was completely drawn into this one-man band for 2 reasons; The first being the obviously beautiful music they create, and secondly his name is the Island that my Dad is from- St. Lucia.  Since today seems like one of the fist really beautiful days of the year so far, I decided this might be a nice time to get reacquainted.

St. Lucia is one guy, Phillip-Jean Grobler from Johannesburg South Africa (you sure don’t hear that everyday). Eventually he shifted to England and then wound up in New York. There he produced some of these amazing alternative electro-pop songs. Just like the Caribbean island, you’ll probably find the music to be sunny and relaxing.

1. “All Eyes On You”- St. Lucia
2. “Paper Heart”- St. Lucia
3. “September”- St- Lucia
4. “Closer Than This”- St. Lucia (Acoustic) (Above)
