Majestic Casual Chapter 1

majestic-625x357

Majestic Casual: The one YouTube channel I can say defines my music taste. The one music channel that never disappoints. The one source that has been helping me explore beyond my music limits since I fell onto this musical plain.

Majestic has been around since 2011, but has grown quickly since obtaining over 1 million subscribers, followers and fans. Although Majestic may be a collective of other artists, it really has become it’s own genre with a community of music lovers looking for the next thing they can fall in love with.

Yes, I’ll be buying this album right after I hit “publish”.

“Music discovery has traditionally been dominated by DJ culture, a privileged group of individuals with the power to break records, artists and new scenes, and while that dominance still remains, today’s deeply connected digital world has led to the emergence of ‘bedroom tastemakers’, a growing band of YouTube channels and individuals with the power to influence millions. At the forefront is Majestic Casual, part of the elite league of YouTube music channels with over a million subscribers… And counting.”  – Majestic Casual

Cool Covers: “Get Lucky”- George Barnett (Daft Punk)

This song is still just going and going…

I’ve heard A LOT of covers of this song and this is definitely up there with the favourites. George Barnett covers Daft Punk but removes a bit of the disco and replaces it with a little more edge. The ONLY thing I dislike is that weird “I’m in a club” horn. Other than that, I love his voice, the shakers, the guitar, the drums and even the little electronic break down. This cover is definitely worth a listen.

A+ for bedroom recordings too.

Mini-Playlist Of The Day: HUMANS

A nice little past time of mine is discovering new music. This music doesn’t necessarily need to be brand new and never heard before (please stop calling me a “hipster”), but it’s nice to discover stuff that’s new to me.

I recently found out that I might me going to Keloha? Random. I know. But pretty cool because the line-up looks pretty amazing. This definitely isn’t any sort of Osheaga line-up but there are a few great acts. A new/old band that I’ve discovered from the line-up is HUMANS. They’re an electronic-indie-pop duo from Vancouver and I’m really digging their sound and variety from one song to the next. Some of their videos are a little messed up, but that’s cool. Check out some of their songs below:

1. “AVEC MES MECS”- HUMANS (above)
2. “Horizon”- HUMANS
3. “Wicked Games”- HUMANS ft. Tristan Orchard
4.“The End”- HUMANS

Cool Covers: “Tessellate”- Ellie Goulding (By Alt-J)

Last year on my birthday the Alt-J album came out. Now they’re my favourite band. This year on my birthday, I discovered  this amazing cover of their song “Tessellate” done by Ellie Goulding.

This cover is sultry, sexy and I love the saxophones on the bridge. It’s very different and unique and she really made it her own, but I still think I prefer the original.  Maybe Alt-Js second album will come out next year on the same day (but then again, I’d hope for one sooner than that anyways)!

“Schoolin”- Everything Everything

I had a friend send me “Schoolin” by Everything Everything last night and as soon as the video started, I was intrigued. Luckily I’ve come to learn that this person’s music taste is more than reliable. From there I went hunting for more and stumbled upon a few more awesome tracks like “Kemosabe” and “Cough Cough“, which are also a bit more recent.

Everything Everything is an alternative indie rock band from the UK. Each song seems to be built based on incredibly smart layers. It’s almost as if your ears are meant to weave in and out of each course and verse. One band they oddly remind me of is Woodhands, who never made it that big, but especially in “Cough Cough” they have similar sounds. Apparently one goal that the band has is to “avoid cliche”. I definitely think they’re doing that so far.

Mini Playlist of the Day: St. Lucia

Last year I was completely drawn into this one-man band for 2 reasons; The first being the obviously beautiful music they create, and secondly his name is the Island that my Dad is from- St. Lucia.  Since today seems like one of the fist really beautiful days of the year so far, I decided this might be a nice time to get reacquainted.

St. Lucia is one guy, Phillip-Jean Grobler from Johannesburg South Africa (you sure don’t hear that everyday). Eventually he shifted to England and then wound up in New York. There he produced some of these amazing alternative electro-pop songs. Just like the Caribbean island, you’ll probably find the music to be sunny and relaxing.

1. “All Eyes On You”- St. Lucia
2. “Paper Heart”- St. Lucia
3. “September”- St- Lucia
4. “Closer Than This”- St. Lucia (Acoustic) (Above)
